Luke Donald is aiming for history—and he's thrilled to have a key weapon back in his arsenal. The European Ryder Cup captain, fresh off back-to-back victories in 2023 and 2024, is setting his sights on an unprecedented three-peat in 2027, and Jon Rahm's recent eligibility clearance has made that goal a whole lot more attainable.

Speaking on the eve of the 108th PGA Championship at Aronimink, Donald couldn't hide his relief after Rahm resolved his disputes with the DP World Tour last week. The Spanish star, who had previously described the sanctions against him as "extortion," is now free to compete for Europe once again. "I was glad an agreement came to fruition sooner rather than later," Donald said. "The longer you leave that, the more pressure falls on me to help rebuild some of those bridges."

But the Englishman isn't losing any sleep over team chemistry. "When it comes to the Ryder Cup in the team room, I think they're all pretty aligned. I don't have any real qualms or issues that the team room won't be unified," he said, dismissing any concerns about potential friction between LIV Golf stars and PGA Tour loyalists.

Donald, who guided Europe to a dominant win in Rome in 2023 and followed it up with another triumph at Bethpage Black last year, has seen firsthand what Rahm brings to the table. "He's played four matches under my captaincy and done extremely well," Donald noted. "To have him available for selection is pretty cool."

There's still some uncertainty on the horizon, though. With LIV Golf's Saudi funding reportedly set to end in August, Donald is taking a wait-and-see approach to the 2027 qualifying criteria. "We don't really know what's going to happen with LIV," he admitted. "We have to think about that in terms of qualification. We don't have to announce anything until late summer, so we'll just wait and see."

If Donald can pull off another win next year at Adare Manor in Ireland, he'll become the first captain in Ryder Cup history to achieve a three-peat—a feat that would cement his legacy alongside the greats. For context, the United States hasn't won on European soil since 1993 at The Belfry, and while the Americans lead the all-time rivalry 27-16, Europe has dominated recent history, winning 11 of the last 15 meetings since the team expanded beyond Great Britain and Ireland.

With Rahm back in the fold and Donald at the helm, the stage is set for another thrilling chapter in golf's greatest team competition.
