MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins' secondary is facing a season of uncertainty, with few established starters and plenty of questions to answer. As the team progresses through offseason workouts, they're searching for solutions among a mix of young cornerbacks, safeties, and veterans signed to minimum or near-minimum contracts.

But there's reason for optimism. New head coach Jeff Hafley brings a strong background in coaching defensive backs, giving the Dolphins a solid foundation to build upon. Alongside general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, Hafley is leading a rebuild that could reshape the entire unit.

The potential cornerstone of this revamped secondary? First-round draft pick Chris Johnson. Defensive coordinator Sean Duggan couldn't hide his excitement about the rookie's playing style: "The thing that stood out to me the most was the way he plays the game. You see a lot of corners that can cover and run, but what really jumped off about him is he embraces contact. He's got heavy hands at the line and he can tackle."

Johnson's impact isn't limited to his physical traits. His football IQ has already impressed the coaching staff. Defensive backs coach Ryan Downard, who previously worked with Hafley and Duggan in Green Bay, noted: "I've noticed already how smart he is. We got a feel for that in the draft process, but we verified it once he got here. His ability to process and understand what we're trying to get done stands out."

Downard added that Johnson's competitive fire sets him apart: "He's super scrappy and wants to win every single rep. That really stood out to me on tape."

As the Dolphins reshape their secondary, the combination of Hafley's coaching pedigree, Johnson's promise, and a hungry group of young players could be the recipe for a defensive turnaround. For now, the focus is on finding the right pieces — and the right fits — to build a unit that can compete in the tough AFC East.
