The Los Angeles Dodgers are making a low-risk move to bolster their organizational pitching depth. On Thursday, the club agreed to a trade with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire right-handed pitcher Chayce McDermott.
McDermott, a 27-year-old, 6-foot-3 hurler, was designated for assignment by Baltimore, making him available. The Dodgers, always active in seeking talent, moved quickly to claim him and complete a minor deal.
The former Ball State standout and 2021 fourth-round pick has limited big-league experience, appearing in five games for the Orioles over the past two seasons. While he has shown strikeout potential, control has been a significant issue, as evidenced by his 12.79 ERA and 14 walks in just 12.2 innings.
According to reports, McDermott is expected to report to the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City. This acquisition is a classic depth play, giving the Dodgers another arm to develop in their system as they manage the long grind of the MLB season. For a team with World Series aspirations, building a deep stable of pitchers is never a bad strategy.
