The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the midst of a rough stretch, and it's not just their on-field performance that's causing concern. Manager Dave Roberts recently revealed that a clubhouse bug has been making its way through the team, adding an extra layer of challenge to their recent slump.
Just last week, third baseman Max Muncy had to exit a game early against the Chicago Cubs after feeling under the weather. According to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, Muncy had been battling chills and a persistent cough for two weeks. He's not alone—Freddie Freeman has experienced similar symptoms, while Alex Freeland and Teoscar Hernandez have dealt with milder cases. The illness has largely flown under the radar, but its impact is becoming impossible to ignore.
"It is a factor. It's the truth," Roberts said. "Freddie's got it a little bit. Muncy's gone through it. Teo's gone through it, Freeland, a lot of different guys. Yeah, it's gone through our clubhouse." The timing couldn't be worse, as the Dodgers' offense has struggled since their series in Colorado. Roberts acknowledged the health issues are a contributing factor but emphasized the need to push through. "It's hard for me to just leave it at that. I do think it's a factor, but I still feel like we've still gotta find a way to be productive."
In the grueling world of baseball, where travel and tight schedules leave little room for recovery, a single sick player can quickly become a "super-spreader." Roberts noted that these outbreaks happen about twice a year, and the team is currently halfway through that cycle. "Because we are together a lot, obviously, traveling and things like that. And a lot of our guys have young kids and that's what happens," he added.
As the Dodgers hit the road for a week-long trip, finishing their series in St. Louis before heading to Houston, they'll need to shake off both the slump and the sickness. For fans and fantasy owners alike, keeping an eye on the health of key players like Freeman and Muncy will be crucial in the days ahead.
