The Los Angeles Dodgers' bullpen, a unit that had remained remarkably healthy to start the season, has finally felt the sting of the injury bug. As the team gears up for a series against the New York Mets, they've made a roster adjustment, placing right-hander Ben Casparius on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation.
To fill the void, the Dodgers have recalled fellow right-hander Kyle Hurt from Triple-A Oklahoma City. This move comes at a time when the Dodgers are looking to solidify their relief corps for the long grind of the season.
For Casparius, the 2026 campaign has been a tough beginning. In five appearances spanning 4.2 innings, he has struggled, posting a 9.64 ERA and a 2.14 WHIP. His last outing in a loss to the Texas Rangers was particularly difficult, as he surrendered two earned runs, two hits, and two walks in just one inning of work.
Manager Dave Roberts noted that Casparius didn't "feel great" after that appearance, leading to manual testing and the subsequent diagnosis of shoulder inflammation. An MRI is scheduled to determine the full extent of the issue. "We just felt it was prudent to put him on the IL," Roberts stated, highlighting the team's cautious approach with their pitching assets.
Stepping into the spotlight is Kyle Hurt, a pitcher with significant upside. Hurt is making his 2026 debut with the big-league club after a successful rehab from Tommy John surgery. He was a name to watch coming out of Spring Training, and though he began the year in Triple-A to build up as a long reliever, his performance has demanded attention.
While his 5.79 ERA with Oklahoma City might not jump off the page, it's inflated by one rough outing. More importantly, his swing-and-miss arsenal has been on full display, showcasing the potential that made him a key bullpen piece to monitor. In six games for the OKC team, his stuff has been electric, giving the Dodgers a powerful arm to call upon as they navigate this early-season adjustment.
