The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a move to bolster their outfield, acquiring 26-year-old Alek Thomas from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a trade announced Tuesday. In exchange, the Diamondbacks received outfielder Jose Requena.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Thomas, the Dodgers designated outfielder Michael Siani for assignment. Siani was claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees back in early February but never suited up for an MLB game in Los Angeles.

Thomas, who turned 26 in late April, is in his fifth big-league season and has spent his entire career with the Diamondbacks organization since being drafted in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut in 2022 and quickly became a regular, playing at least 113 games in three of his first four seasons—though a left hamstring strain limited him to just 39 games in 2024.

Last season marked the strongest campaign of Thomas's career. He slashed .249/.289/.370 with a .659 OPS, matching his career-high with nine home runs while playing a personal-best 143 games. This season, however, has been a different story. Through 28 games, Thomas is hitting just .181/.222/.340 with a .562 OPS and two home runs.

What Thomas brings to the Dodgers is undeniable athleticism and speed, along with valuable outfield depth and another left-handed bat in the lineup. While he's off to a slow start at the plate, joining a powerhouse organization like Los Angeles could provide the spark he needs to turn things around and rediscover the form that made him a key piece in Arizona's outfield.
