The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a roster move, claiming left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. To free up a spot, the team has shifted versatile infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman to the 60-day injured list, a strategic decision that gives the Dodgers more flexibility as they navigate the early season.

Edman, who began the season on the IL, has been recovering from ankle surgery. Because he hasn't been activated yet, the Dodgers can retroactively place him on the 60-day IL, meaning he'll be eligible to return as early as May 24th. The switch-hitter has been making steady progress, participating in live batting practice throughout spring training and the early weeks of the season. However, manager Dave Roberts has noted that Edman's recovery is being measured carefully, particularly his sprinting ability, which is a key indicator for a player known for his speed and defensive range. "He's not where he needs to be running-wise yet," Roberts said, emphasizing the team's cautious approach.

The Dodgers are in no rush to rush Edman back. With young infielders Alex Freeland and Hyeseong Kim holding their own, the team has the luxury of letting Edman fully heal. The competition between Freeland and Kim remains ongoing, but the return of Kiké Hernández and Mookie Betts from injury could soon force tough decisions. Santiago Espinal may be designated for assignment, and one of Kim, Freeland, or Alex Call could also be sent down to make room.

As for the newly acquired Barnes, the 30-year-old lefty is a minor-league journeyman with a brief MLB history. He made his debut with the Minnesota Twins, posting a 5.92 ERA over nine appearances (eight starts) and 38 innings. After a rough stint in the majors, Barnes spent three seasons in the KBO in South Korea, where he found some success. He returned stateside with the Cincinnati Reds but struggled in Triple-A, leading to another overseas stint before landing with the Cubs in 2026.

Barnes showed promise in the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate this season, posting a 3.04 ERA over seven games. An injury crisis in Chicago prompted a call-up, but his lone MLB outing was rocky—three innings, three earned runs. The Cubs designated him for assignment shortly after, and the Dodgers have now added him as their 29th pitcher on the 40-man roster or injured list. For a team that values depth, Barnes provides another left-handed option as the Dodgers continue to shape their pitching staff.
