The Los Angeles Rams may have landed their quarterback of the future, but not everyone looked thrilled in the moment.
When the team selected Alabama QB Ty Simpson in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the spotlight quickly shifted from the player to head coach Sean McVay’s reaction.
Known for his energy and enthusiasm, McVay’s noticeably subdued demeanor raised eyebrows almost instantly.
And in a draft filled with surprises, this might have been one of the most talked-about moments off the field.
The immediate reaction inside the Rams’ press conference didn’t match the usual excitement that follows a first-round quarterback selection.
“The Rams’ press conference with GM Les Snead and HC Sean McVay after selecting QB Ty Simpson didn’t exactly give off the vibe that McVay was the most pumped person in the world about the pick,” Ari Meirov wrote on X.
That observation quickly gained traction because it aligned with what many noticed watching the full interaction. McVay appeared far more reserved than usual, offering short answers and repeatedly emphasizing that the team still belongs to Matthew Stafford.
Given that Simpson was taken with the 13th overall pick, a move widely viewed as a long-term succession plan, the lack of visible excitement stood out even more.
Especially for a team still operating in a win-now window, the decision naturally sparked questions about how aligned the leadership group was on the pick.
That reaction opened the door for outside speculation, with some believing the pick may not have been McVay’s preferred direction.
As highlighted by NFL expert John Frascella, the narrative quickly took on a life of its own.
“This is BIZARRE… I have NEVER seen the Rams in disarray like this… I dunno, my gut tells me Sean McVay wanted Kenyon Sadiq or Makai Lemon…,” Frascella stated.
While that claim is speculative, it reflects a broader reaction across the league. The Rams’ decision to take Simpson came as a surprise to many, especially given his profile as a developmental quarterback with limited starting experience.
At the same time, the logic behind the pick is clear. With Matthew Stafford nearing the latter stages of his career, Los Angeles needed a long-term answer at quarterback.
The tension, if there is any, likely comes from timing. Drafting for the future while still competing in the present is always a delicate balance, and McVay’s reaction simply added fuel to that conversation.
Whether this moment ends up being overanalyzed or a sign of differing priorities will only become clear with time.
