Dick Vitale, 86, said he's 4-for-4 in beating cancer, and that he plans to make it 5-for-5 after getting the news Monday.

Dick Vitale, the iconic voice of college basketball, is facing a new opponent. The legendary ESPN broadcaster announced Monday he has been diagnosed with cancer for a fifth time, but true to his competitive spirit, he's already declaring his intention to go 5-for-5 in his personal fight.

At 86, Vitale shared that he has been diagnosed with melanoma in his lung and liver and will begin treatment immediately. His statement was characteristically upbeat: "The best news I can share today is this... I feel fantastic."

This news comes after a remarkable series of victories. Vitale has previously battled and beaten melanoma, lymphoma, vocal cord cancer, and lymph node cancer since his first diagnosis in 2021. His resilience has been on full display for fans, as he returned to the broadcast booth this past February after an extended leave, even making a special March Madness appearance alongside Charles Barkley.

Vitale's legacy stretches far beyond his iconic catchphrases like "Awesome, baby!" and his Hall of Fame broadcasting career, which began with a fledgling ESPN in 1979. Before becoming a household name, he was a successful coach, leading the University of Detroit to the Sweet 16 and briefly coaching the Detroit Pistons.

Perhaps his most inspiring work happens off the court. Through his foundation, Vitale has been a tireless fundraiser for pediatric cancer research, raising over $100 million. He emphasized that this mission continues, stating, "I'm more motivated than ever to raise money for kids battling cancer."

For a man who has lived a life dedicated to the passion of sport and the fight against disease, this latest challenge is another chapter. The entire sports world is rallying behind Dickie V., ready to cheer him on to another victory.
