The Arizona Diamondbacks got a major boost to their lineup on Friday, activating catcher Gabriel Moreno from the 10-day injured list just in time for the start of a crucial weekend series against the Chicago Cubs.
Moreno, 26, had been sidelined since April 10 with a strained left oblique, an injury that kept him out for nearly three weeks. In just 13 games this season, he's already batting .275 with five RBIs, showcasing the kind of production the Diamondbacks sorely missed during his absence.
"Having Gabby healthy and in this lineup means we're a different team," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "It's the quality of at-bat, how he controls the running game defensively, how he runs the game behind the plate. Nothing against the other catchers, he's just very dynamic and has a lot of tools."
The Diamondbacks didn't stop there. They also recalled left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia from Triple-A Reno, adding another arm to the bullpen. Garcia, 25, has been dominant in the minors this season, posting a 2.19 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 12.1 innings in 10 appearances. He was acquired by Arizona in the Josh Naylor trade and has big-league experience with both the Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners last year.
"Garcia is really a great weapon for us in the bullpen," Lovullo added. "It's not just left on left—he's got wipeout stuff against any type of hitter. When it's on, it's very impressive."
To make room on the roster, left-hander Philip Abner was optioned to Triple-A Reno, and catcher Aramis Garcia was designated for assignment. The moves signal the Diamondbacks are all-in on maximizing their roster as they look to make a push in the competitive NL West.
For fans and fantasy owners alike, Moreno's return is a welcome sight—his ability to handle a pitching staff and deliver at the plate makes him a cornerstone for Arizona's postseason aspirations. Whether you're tracking his stats or just love the game, this is the kind of roster shakeup that can change the momentum of a season.
