The Detroit Tigers have brought back a familiar face, acquiring infielder Zack Short in a trade with the Washington Nationals on Friday, May 1. In exchange, the Nationals will receive either cash considerations or a player to be named later. Short, now 30, is headed to Triple-A Toledo to continue his season.
This move marks a homecoming for Short, who originally made his Major League debut with the Tigers on April 21, 2021. Over his five-year MLB career, he's appeared in 241 games, spending the 2021 through 2023 seasons in Detroit before moving on to other organizations.
So far in 2026, Short has been playing for Triple-A Rochester in the Nationals' system, appearing in 21 games. He's posted a .200 batting average with one home run, eight walks, and 17 strikeouts, while logging all 155⅓ innings at shortstop—his primary position. His defensive versatility is one of his biggest assets, as he's also seen time at second base, third base, center field, left field, and right field throughout his professional career.
For Tigers fans, this trade brings back a player who knows the organization well and can provide valuable depth in the infield. Whether he'll make an impact at the MLB level again remains to be seen, but for now, he'll look to find his rhythm in Toledo.
