The Detroit Pistons showed their trademark grit in Game 3, but it wasn't enough to overcome a disastrous first half against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite a furious rally, the Pistons fell 116-109, cutting their series lead to 2-1.
The turning point came late in the second quarter, when a 20-second stretch encapsulated Detroit's struggles. Donovan Mitchell drilled a stepback three over Duncan Robinson, then Max Strus forced Cade Cunningham into a turnover, leading to a Jarrett Allen dunk. The sequence left Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff calling a timeout as the Cleveland crowd erupted. At halftime, Detroit trailed 64-48.
But this Pistons team has proven they don't quit. They stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Cavaliers 33-19 and cutting the deficit to just three points. The energy shifted, and for a moment, it looked like another comeback was in the making.
However, Cleveland's star power proved too much down the stretch. Donovan Mitchell finished with 35 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while Jarrett Allen added 18 points—13 of them in that dominant first half. For Detroit, Cade Cunningham nearly notched a triple-double with 27 points, nine rebounds, and 10 assists. Tobias Harris chipped in 21 points, but Jalen Duren struggled, managing just 11 points.
The Pistons now face a critical Game 4, knowing that a win would put them in the driver's seat. If their third-quarter surge is any indication, this series is far from over.
