The Detroit Lions have officially added nine undrafted free agents to their roster, signing the group on Tuesday, May 12. This class brings a mix of potential and depth, including a quarterback who could develop behind Jared Goff, several defensive linemen to bolster the trenches, and a tight end known for his blocking who made stops at Alabama and Tennessee.

Here's a closer look at each new Lion and what they bring to the table:

Luke Altmyer, QB, Illinois — A three-year starter for the Fighting Illini, Altmyer transferred from Ole Miss and finished his college career with 7,924 passing yards. He worked with Lions assistant Marques Tuiasosopo at the Senior Bowl, giving Detroit an early look at his potential as a developmental backup.

Defensive Back, South Florida — This playmaker recorded four interceptions and 3½ sacks in 13 starts last season. He also had four picks during his three years at USF, following a two-year stint at Kansas State. His ball-hawking skills could make him a valuable addition to the secondary.

Linebacker, Morgan State — Ranked fifth on NFL.com's list of undrafted free agent linebackers, he's second all-time in tackles at Morgan State with 298. His production and instincts make him a name to watch in camp.

Defensive Lineman, Cal — A run-stopper who led Cal with 56 tackles last season—the most by a Bears defensive lineman since Cam Jordan had 62 in 2010. He spent his first four seasons at Notre Dame, bringing experience from a top-tier program.

Tight End, Tennessee — A block-first tight end who started at Hutchinson Community College, then played two seasons at Alabama before finishing at Tennessee. He caught 26 passes in 11 starts last year for the Volunteers, showing he can contribute as a receiver too.

Defensive Lineman, Big Ten — Started his college career at Texas A&M and had three sacks in 2025. He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors from coaches last season, proving he can compete at a high level.

Defensive Lineman, Rutgers — Started the final 47 games of his career, with stops at Long Island University and James Madison before landing at Rutgers. He posted 13 sacks and 18½ tackles for loss at James Madison in 2024, plus 2½ sacks at Rutgers in 2025. His disruptive presence could be a steal.

Offensive Lineman, Rutgers — Started two years at right tackle and played over 1,200 snaps at left tackle in his career. His versatility across the line gives Detroit valuable depth in the trenches.

Defensive Back, Tennessee — Played three seasons with the Volunteers. He blocked a punt against Alabama as a freshman in 2021 and recorded his first career interception last fall. His special teams experience adds another dimension to his game.

As the Lions gear up for training camp, these undrafted rookies will have a chance to prove they belong. Keep an eye on this group—they could surprise.
