Desert Vista girls' basketball is on the hunt for a new head coach. Erin O'Bryan, who took the reins in 2023, has officially stepped down to pursue her dream of coaching at the collegiate level.
O'Bryan confirmed her departure to The Arizona Republic, noting that she submitted her resignation on April 21. "I think it's just time for me to move on to coach in college," she said. "I feel like I fulfilled my purpose at the high school level. I have desires to coach at the next level. Now is the time."
During her two-year tenure, O'Bryan led the Thunder to a solid 48-38 record, highlighted by a memorable run to the Open Division championship game and a semifinal appearance. She took over the program following a historic season—the year after Desert Vista claimed its first-ever Open Division state title, a tough act to follow.
While O'Bryan is actively searching for her next opportunity, she remains tight-lipped about specific destinations as paperwork is still being finalized. She will continue to honor her commitment with Hoop Code, one of the area's premier club basketball programs, through July.
This marks the second time in recent years that a Desert Vista coach has stepped away to chase a college-level role. Former coach Dave Williams left in 2023 for the same reason, eventually landing at Tempe McClintock. For O'Bryan, the transition feels like the natural next step in a career that has already left a lasting mark on Arizona high school basketball.
As the Thunder program turns the page, the search for a new leader begins—one who can build on the foundation O'Bryan helped strengthen.
