When Deion Sanders talks about his son Shedeur's journey to the NFL, he doesn't sugarcoat a thing. "When he takes off his shirt, I see the scars on his back that he's been through hell, but he's made it through hell," Deion told Garrett Bush on "The Barbershop" podcast this week. "He kept going and he matured, not like he was a child, but he matured spiritually. You can't force this. If it ain't your time, it ain't your time."
The former Colorado Buffalo and Heisman hopeful entered the 2025 NFL Draft with all eyes on him. But what was supposed to be a triumphant moment turned into a waiting game. Speculation swirled that Shedeur didn't interview well with teams, and reports painted a picture of a player who wasn't ready for the big stage. That narrative fueled his surprising fall to the fifth round, where the Cleveland Browns finally scooped him up.
Deion, never one to stay quiet, fired back at those claims. "It was some ignorant things came out about him pre-draft and all that, and that was a lie," he said. "He would never go into a meeting with headphones on. He would never go into a meeting unprepared. That's just not who he is. There's no way he could accomplish the things he accomplished without being prepared."
Once the NFL season kicked off, the question wasn't if Shedeur would play, but when. The Browns started the 2025 season with veteran Joe Flacco under center, and Shedeur found himself third on the depth chart, behind fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. He didn't take a single first-team rep during training camp.
The tide turned in Week 6, when Flacco was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals, bumping Shedeur up to the backup spot. But it wasn't until Week 11, after Gabriel suffered a concussion against the Baltimore Ravens, that Shedeur finally saw the field in the second half. From there, he took the reins, starting the Browns' final seven games of the season.
Now, with the 2026 season on the horizon, Shedeur is set to battle Deshaun Watson for the No. 1 job. It's a long way from the draft day drama, but if his father's words are any indication, Shedeur has the grit and the scars to prove he belongs.
