Today marks a pivotal moment for one of the most sought-after high school football talents in The News-Gazette's coverage area. St. Joseph-Ogden offensive lineman Cameron Wagner, a four-star recruit, is set to announce his college decision. Sports Editor Matt Daniels breaks down the four contenders vying for his commitment.

First up, Illinois. The Fighting Illini have time, location, and recent success on their side. They were the third school to offer Wagner a scholarship back in June 2024, well before his sophomore season at SJ-O and long before 20 other programs joined the race. Wagner has made multiple visits to Champaign over the past two seasons, during which Illinois has turned heads with a 19-7 record and back-to-back bowl wins over SEC opponents—unprecedented success for the program under Bret Bielema.

Then there's Notre Dame, whose recruitment of Wagner took a dramatic turn on March 25, 2025. That's when Marcus Freeman and his staff extended an offer, just over two months after the Fighting Irish played in the College Football Playoff national championship game. The offer sparked a flurry of activity—Ohio State, Mississippi, Florida, and Indiana all followed suit within 10 days. Notre Dame's national brand and consistent CFP contention under Freeman make it an enticing option.

Oregon, led by Dan Lanning, has built a reputation as a perennial national title contender, going 48-8 in Lanning's first four seasons. Wagner has made it clear he wants to compete for championships, and the Ducks have reached the last two College Football Playoffs. The high-octane offense Oregon runs is a major draw, as is the strong relationship Wagner has developed with Lanning since the Ducks offered him a week before Christmas 2025.

Finally, Wisconsin. First-year offensive line coach Eric Mateos has made Wagner a top priority since joining Luke Fickell's staff from Arkansas in December. The Badgers offered Wagner a few weeks later, building on early interest that included a visit to Madison for a 2024 home game against Alabama. Over the past five months, that interest has intensified, and Wisconsin's stellar reputation for developing offensive linemen adds to its appeal.
