The Stuart Cramer baseball community is mourning a devastating loss after assistant coach Casey McMillen passed away suddenly on Friday, just minutes before a pivotal NCHSAA 4A West regional semifinal against rival Burns.
Scheduled for a 7 p.m. first pitch in Lawndale, the game was abruptly postponed as McMillen suffered a medical emergency during pregame preparations. Despite immediate efforts from medical personnel, including CPR, attempts to revive the beloved coach were unsuccessful.
In a show of solidarity and respect, officials from both Stuart Cramer and Burns High School agreed to reschedule the playoff matchup for Saturday, May 16, at 7 p.m. The decision underscores the deep bonds that transcend competition in high school sports.
"Please continue to pray for the Stuart Cramer community during this time," Burns High School baseball shared on Facebook. "We will compete between the lines, but how you treat each other outside of the lines is paramount."
The tragedy strikes during what has been a historic season for the Storm. With a 21-5 record, Stuart Cramer is celebrating its first 20-win campaign in the program's 13-year history, along with its deepest postseason run ever. For a team that has thrived without a home field this season, this loss adds an emotional weight to an already remarkable journey.
As the community comes together to honor McMillen's memory, the rescheduled game will serve as more than just a playoff contest—it will be a testament to the resilience and unity that define high school athletics.
