The Mets' four-game winning streak came to a cold halt at Citi Field on Wednesday, as left-hander David Peterson endured another tough outing in a 7-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
For the second consecutive start, Peterson struggled to find his rhythm. The Diamondbacks' offense came out aggressively, plating a run in the first inning before erupting for four more in the second. Key blows included an RBI single from Ketel Marte and a two-run double by star outfielder Corbin Carroll, both coming on the first pitch of the at-bat.
While Peterson managed to retire 11 of his final 12 batters, the early damage was done. His final line showed five earned runs on six hits over five innings, pushing his early-season ERA to 6.14. The Diamondbacks consistently made hard contact, registering eight batted balls with exit velocities over 95 mph against him.
This performance continues a concerning trend for the 2023 All-Star, who also struggled mightily in the latter part of last season. After a strong, scoreless debut this year, he has now surrendered five earned runs in each of his last two starts.
Offensively, the Mets' lineup—playing without Juan Soto—was stifled by Arizona starter Ryne Nelson. The Mets' only runs came late, unable to mount a comeback against the Diamondbacks' pitching.
In relief, Sean Manaea provided four innings but surrendered two runs on a bases-loaded double. Notably, his fastball velocity continues to sit lower than previous seasons, though he has been effective out of the bullpen so far this year.
The loss snaps positive momentum for the Mets, who will look to reset and bounce back in the series finale, hoping for a stronger performance from their rotation.
