The Boston Bruins have a clear priority this offseason—and it's not just about adding speed or skill. If you've been following along since February, you know the right side of the blue line is nearly bare. With the offseason now in full swing, it's time for the front office to address this glaring need.
Two former Maple Leafs turned Bruins are off to a strong start at the IIHF World Championships. Meanwhile, across the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens look to advance to Round 3 tonight, San Jose's Macklin Celebrini becomes extension-eligible on July 1, and Minnesota's Quinn Hughes is in a similar boat. Team Germany's Moritz Seider pulled off a highlight-reel save at the Worlds, and the Maine Mariners have a chance to clinch their second-round series tonight.
In other news, the Vegas Golden Knights were handed a stiff penalty after failing to make head coach John Tortorella available to the media on Thursday.
Happy Saturday—here's your Daily Bean catch-up on Bruins and league news:
THE OTHER NEED: The Bruins front office has talked plenty about speed and skill, but the real hole is on defense. Boston needs a right-handed defenseman—whether via trade, free agency (restricted or unrestricted), or the draft. Right now, only three of the team's seven right-handed defensemen are under contract for next season. Looking ahead to 2026-27, Billy Sweezey is the only minor-league defenseman signed.
IIHF WORLDS: Eight Bruins are in Switzerland for the IIHF World Championships, which kicked off this morning. In the U.S., catch the action on the NHL Network; in Canada, it's on TSN. Yesterday, Fraser Minten dished out two assists and earned Player of the Game honors. Alex Steeves also found the back of the net—he had nine goals in 43 games this season.
