Niall Currie's tenure as Portadown manager has come to an abrupt end, with the club announcing his immediate departure with just two games remaining in the Irish Premiership season.
Currie, who returned for a second spell in charge in October 2022, saw his final match end in a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Crusaders last Saturday—a performance he himself labeled "abysmal." This late-season change adds a layer of drama to the Ports' final fixtures against Ballymena United and Bangor, where they currently sit 10th in the table.
His second stint was a rollercoaster of highs and lows, marked by significant resilience. After being unable to stave off relegation in the 2022-23 season, Currie engineered a swift and impressive comeback, leading Portadown to the Championship title and promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt. The campaign also featured a memorable run to the 2024 BetMcLean Cup final, though they ultimately fell to Linfield.
Last season, he successfully consolidated the club's top-flight status, guiding them to an eighth-place finish—just two points shy of a European play-off spot. The 53-year-old manager, whose career includes spells at Dundela, Carrick Rangers, Ards, Loughgall, and Annagh United, now leaves the Shamrock Park dugout as the club begins its search for a new leader to build on the foundation he helped restore.
