Chicago Cubs closer Daniel Palencia was activated from the 15-day injured list on Sunday after being sidelined by a left oblique strain. Palencia pitched five scoreless innings over five appearances before he was placed on the IL on April 17. The right-hander made one rehab appearance, reaching 102 mph while recording two outs for Triple-A Iowa on Friday.

The Chicago Cubs are getting some much-needed firepower back in the bullpen. Closer Daniel Palencia has been activated from the 15-day injured list after recovering from a left oblique strain, and he’s wasting no time reminding everyone why he’s so valuable.

Before landing on the IL on April 17, Palencia was lights out, tossing five scoreless innings across five appearances. If that wasn’t enough to get fans excited, his rehab stint with Triple-A Iowa on Friday certainly was—hitting an eye-popping 102 mph while recording two outs. That kind of velocity is a game-changer for a team that’s been navigating a tough injury stretch.

The Cubs have been hit hard, especially in the bullpen, but they’ve managed to stay hot. Going into Sunday’s series finale against Arizona, Chicago was 14-3 in their last 17 games, showing resilience despite the setbacks. They’ve also welcomed back key reliever Phil Maton, who was reinstated last week after dealing with right knee tendinitis. “I think we are getting healthy,” manager Craig Counsell said. “We still got to perform, and we’ve performed really good the last two and a half weeks.”

The good news doesn’t stop there. Second baseman Nico Hoerner returned to the starting lineup on Sunday after missing Saturday’s 2-0 win over the Diamondbacks due to tightness on the left side of his neck. Hoerner has been a standout for the NL Central leaders, batting .297 with four homers and 26 RBIs in 32 games. “Both days he’s done something beforehand to test his readiness and today there was no symptoms and felt really good,” Counsell added.

To make room for Palencia on the roster, the Cubs designated right-hander Yacksel Rios for assignment. Rios pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in his only appearance with Chicago last weekend. With Palencia back and the team trending upward, the Cubs are looking to keep that momentum rolling—and their bullpen is shaping up to be a serious weapon.
