California State University, Bakersfield has made a significant move to revitalize its swimming and diving program, announcing the hiring of Shane Pelton as its new director. With nearly two decades of NCAA coaching experience, including ten years within the California State University system, Pelton brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep connection to the Roadrunner community.

This hire marks a homecoming of sorts, as Pelton previously served as CSUB's head assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the 2015-2016 season. That insider perspective was a key factor in his selection. "He understands what makes CSUB a special place and has a genuine passion for Bakersfield," said Acting Director of Athletics Sarah Tuohy, expressing confidence that Pelton will lead with "integrity, energy, and purpose."

Pelton's resume extends beyond California, with coaching stops at Arizona State University and the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, giving him a broad view of collegiate aquatics. His mission in Bakersfield is clear: restoration. He acknowledges the program's past as a "powerhouse" and is driven by the belief that it can return to prominence, fueled by the lasting relationships it fosters.

That community-focused vision resonated strongly with the search committee. Associate Athletic Director Stanzi McGowan, a Bakersfield native, called the hire "especially meaningful," citing Pelton's "experience, energy, and relationship-centered leadership" as the perfect combination to reconnect the program with student-athletes, alumni, and the local swim community. For CSUB Athletics, this appointment is more than a new hire; it's a strategic investment in rebuilding a legacy, signaling an exciting new chapter for Roadrunner swimmers and divers.
