Wu Yize, 22, receives a rock star's welcome after becoming second-youngest player to win a world title.

When 22-year-old Wu Yize walked into the TNT billiards club in Xi'an, China, the crowd erupted like he was a rock star. Chants and cheers filled the room as the shy, baby-faced snooker prodigy waved modestly, still unaccustomed to the sudden fame sweeping his homeland.

Just days earlier, Wu made history by becoming the second-youngest player ever to win the World Snooker Championship—marking the second consecutive year a Chinese player has claimed the title. But his journey to the top is nothing short of a fairytale. At just 16, he dropped out of school and moved to Sheffield, England, to chase his dream of turning professional. Now, he's returned home a world champion.

"It's great to feel the warmth of my homeland," Wu said with a gentle smile when asked about the overwhelming fan support.

During the celebration, Wu delighted the crowd by showing off his signature shots, including a special exhibition match against fan Liu YiFei, who had won a play-off to play alongside the champion. "His success has made me more determined to improve my own skills," Liu said. "In China, so many more people are playing. More pool halls are opening, and the sport is becoming ever more popular."

That popularity is staggering. An estimated 60 million people play billiards in China each year across some 300,000 halls—and the country is now producing world-class snooker talent at an impressive rate. Chinese players currently make up a quarter of all professionals on the global circuit, and that number is only expected to grow.

One eight-year-old boy in the crowd summed up the new generation's ambition perfectly: "One day, I'd like to be champion like Wu Yize." With snooker booming across China and young stars like Wu leading the way, that dream might not be far off.
