As he begins his NFL career, Cowboys first-round pick Caleb Downs has some new footwear to add to his wardrobe.

The No. 11 overall selection in the 2026 NFL draft flew to Dallas on Friday and was welcomed in style by his new team. Included in a tour of The Star was a pair of custom cowboy boots from the world-famous Lucchese.

Founded in San Antonio and with locations in Arlington and the Fort Worth Stockyards, Lucchese is the official bootmaker of the Cowboys, and they were waiting to outfit the new safety when he arrived at the team facility in Frisco. Downs is the second Cowboys' draft pick to receive his own pair of boots, after offensive lineman Tyler Booker started the tradition last year.

The personal touch from the team was welcomed by the two-time unanimous All-American, who said in his introductory press conference he felt like he was stepping into a "family organization" when he was drafted by Dallas.

"It's a great feeling, honestly. You can tell everyone has a real family feel around here," Downs said while sitting next to Jerry Jones and Brian Schottenheimer. "When I came on my top-30 visit, you get to meet everybody and I asked 'How long have you been here?' and there were countless people who said they've been here 10 years, 13 years, 15 years. You can tell it's a real family organization, just from the time that people have spent together."

Dallas hopes the 2025 Jim Thorpe Award winner can fill a need at the safety position, which has lacked a true superstar since Darren Woodson. So far, the boots fit, for Downs and for the Cowboys.
