Winters, who was acquired in a trade with the 49ers, is expected to be Dallas' middle linebacker in Parker's revamped defense.

The Dallas Cowboys' defense is getting a serious injection of intensity, and defensive coordinator Christian Parker couldn't be more excited. Speaking Friday after the first day of rookie practice at The Star in Frisco, Parker praised newly acquired linebacker Dee Winters, emphasizing the physical edge the former TCU standout brings to the field.

Winters, a Brenham native, joined the Cowboys last week in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers, costing Dallas a fifth-round pick on the second day of the NFL draft. While he played weakside linebacker with the 49ers—learning behind perennial All-Pro Fred Warner—Parker confirmed Winters is now slated to take over the middle linebacker role in Dallas' revamped defense.

"I think No. 1 you feel his athleticism, you feel his intensity to the football," Parker said. "He's a really good space player. He can really evaporate space whether that ball is thrown or on check downs running from C gap to C gap or A gap to C gap or whatever it might be. You just see this intensity and really good angles that he plays with and he's violent. We encourage that."

Parker noted it's "too early to tell" if Winters will line up next to weakside linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, but the early signs are promising. The Cowboys have been searching for a traditional middle linebacker all offseason, missing out in free agency and not finding a draft-day solution. Winters, who posted a career-high 101 tackles with eight tackles for loss and three quarterback hits last season, now has the chance to fill that void.

With 155 tackles in 47 career games, Winters has the production and the mindset to anchor the defense. As Parker put it, the linebacker's violent style is exactly what the Cowboys want—and fans should be ready for a defense that plays with a new edge.
