The Cowboys took receiver Anthony Smith in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, but it appears that move is a questionable one by the franchise.

The NFL Draft has officially wrapped up, and now the season of grading those picks is in full swing. For the Dallas Cowboys, the consensus is that they knocked it out of the park—thanks largely to their first-round selections, Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence. But when you look beyond the early rounds, questions start to emerge.

Take East Carolina wide receiver Anthony Smith, for instance. The Cowboys snagged him in the seventh round, a part of the draft where teams are essentially throwing darts. From the fifth round onward, picks are often seen as lottery tickets: maybe they develop into something, maybe they don't. Since no premium draft capital is spent, there's little risk if they fail to pan out. Still, late-round picks face an uphill battle just to make the roster, let alone survive training camp. So grading them can feel a bit premature—why not wait and see what they can do on the field?

But CBS Sports' Josh Edwards didn't wait. He recently named every team's "most questionable pick," and for Dallas, that dubious honor went to Smith. "The board fell into place well, and the franchise was able to address critical defensive needs," Edwards wrote. "Little concern could be raised with the team's choices, but Smith may be the least favorite of the group, despite some late buzz in the process."

Considering the makeup of the Cowboys' wide receiver room, adding another body—especially in the seventh round—is hardly a big deal. Smith posted solid numbers last season: 64 receptions for 1,053 yards and seven touchdowns. He'll likely land on the practice squad if all goes well. But with CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Ryan Flournoy, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Jonathan Mingo, and KaVontae Turpin ahead of him on the depth chart, Smith has his work cut out for him.

For a seventh-round pick, that's just the nature of the game. Sometimes the best value comes from the players who prove everyone wrong.
