Court dismisses domestic battery case against Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt

Merritt is entering his eighth season as Kansas City DB's coach.

The District Court of Johnson County, Kansas, has dismissed the domestic battery case against Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt, clearing the way for him to focus on the upcoming season. The case was dismissed without prejudice on Thursday, just two weeks after his arrest on April 22.

Merritt, who has coached the Chiefs' defensive backs since 2019, was initially charged with a Class B Person misdemeanor for domestic battery. The complaint alleged that he "unlawfully, knowingly or recklessly caused bodily harm" to one of his five children, including two daughters. He pleaded not guilty and was released on a $2,500 bond.

According to Merritt's attorney, Ryan Ginie, the district attorney's office reviewed additional information and agreed the case should be dismissed. "The DA's office looked at it a little more thoroughly and reviewed some additional information and agreed it was a matter that should be dismissed," Ginie told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Now in his eighth season with the Chiefs, the 54-year-old Merritt has been a key part of Kansas City's dynasty, helping the team win all three of its Super Bowls under head coach Andy Reid. Before joining the Chiefs, Merritt won two Super Bowl rings with the New York Giants, where he worked from 2004 to 2017. Throughout his career, he has been closely associated with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, working under him with both the Giants and the Chiefs.

With the legal matter resolved, Merritt can now turn his full attention to preparing the Chiefs' defensive backs for another championship run. For fans and players alike, this dismissal means one less distraction as the team gears up for what promises to be another exciting season. Whether you're cheering from the stands or gearing up in your favorite Chiefs gear, it's all about focusing on the game ahead.
