It's hard to imagine this NFL veteran not in the black and gold of the Steel City, but it could be a reality in the near future.

It's almost impossible to picture the Pittsburgh Steelers without T.J. Watt in black and gold. The star linebacker has been the heartbeat of the defense for nearly a decade, but a tough reality could be looming on the horizon.

According to a recent report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, whispers from NFL coaches, executives, and scouts suggest the Steelers might face a major defensive shakeup by 2027. The buzz centers around rising edge rusher Nick Herbig, currently the team's No. 3 option off the edge. After racking up 7.5 sacks last season, Herbig is becoming a hot name around the league—and keeping him could come at a steep price.

Here's the dilemma: if Pittsburgh commits big money to Herbig long-term, they'd have three hefty contracts tied to one position group. That's a tough pill to swallow for any front office. "Watt, for all his greatness, turns 32 in October and has guaranteed salaries of $32 million in both 2026 and 2027," Fowler noted, citing executive opinions. "Watt is a legacy player, something Pittsburgh values more than most. But some teams could see Pittsburgh at least considering moving on from him."

Watt has been a Steeler since day one, playing nine seasons and amassing 115 career sacks. Last season brought a major scare when a collapsed lung from dry needling sidelined him for a few games, but he fought back to the field. His impact is undeniable, but the business side of football never sleeps.

For now, Steelers fans can focus on the upcoming season, which kicks off at home against the Atlanta Falcons on September 13th. But as the 2027 offseason starts to come into view, that familiar No. 90 might not be a lock to stay in Pittsburgh forever. It's a thought no fan wants to entertain—but one that could become a very real storyline.
