But beyond the game itself, there's growing buzz that this could be the perfect moment for the Lions to unveil their new Nike Rivalries uniforms. While the design hasn't been revealed yet, Lions president and CEO Rod Wood confirmed that Detroit is among the teams receiving these alternate threads in 2026.
"We're the second year of the Rivalry uniforms," Wood explained. "You get to wear them once at a home game against one of your division opponents. Once the schedule comes out in May, we'll sit down and figure out the best time to unveil them."
The timing couldn't be better. Thanksgiving games are nationally televised and carry a festive atmosphere that's perfect for a uniform debut. Under league rules, the Lions can wear these alternates once per season, and it must be at home against a division opponent—a box that the Bears matchup checks perfectly.
Wood teased that the new uniforms will stay true to Detroit's iconic colors and look but with "a little modern twist that the fans are going to like." He described a collaborative design process with Nike that spanned several years, with the team pushing back on early versions until they settled on a final product everyone is excited about.
The Lions will know their full 2026 schedule—including home dates against the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings—when the NFL releases it later this week. That will help them finalize their uniform plans, but all signs point to Thanksgiving as the ideal showcase.
For context, Detroit previously wore its "Motor City Muscle" alternate uniforms on Christmas Day against the Vikings last season. A Thanksgiving debut for the new Rivalries gear would continue the trend of using holiday games as a stage for special looks.
