Cornish Pirates keep their Champ play-off hopes alive as they come back to beat third-placed Coventry 29-24 at the Mennaye.

The Cornish Pirates kept their Championship play-off dreams alive with a gritty 29-24 comeback victory over third-placed Coventry at the Mennaye. It was a must-win clash that had fans on the edge of their seats, and the Pirates delivered when it mattered most.

This bonus-point win—their second in the last four games—means seventh-placed Pirates now head into a season-defining finale. A victory at sixth-placed Hartpury next week could be enough to close the three-point gap and secure a spot in the post-season. It's the kind of high-stakes drama that makes rugby so thrilling.

"It was all about the outcome today, it was about staying in the fight for the playoffs," said joint-head coach Gavin Cattle. "So we've taken it to the last game, so I suppose that's the good thing about the format, we've got something to play for next week."

The match started with a bang as Matt Cannon crossed for a sixth-minute try, giving Pirates an early lead. But Coventry responded quickly, with David Opoku touching down just five minutes later. The hosts, however, seized control before halftime. Saul Nelson powered over in the 30th minute, and Harry Yates added a third try six minutes later to send Pirates into the break with a 19-10 advantage.

The second half belonged to Coventry—at least for a while. Tries from Eliot Salt and Murray Davidson flipped the script, putting the visitors 24-19 ahead. It looked like Pirates' play-off hopes might be slipping away. But with four minutes left, Charlie Rice produced the decisive score, and Arwel Robson's late penalty sealed the win.

"I've got to say, you talk about winning ugly, that was pretty ugly," Cattle admitted. "Coventry had that sort of safety net that are in the playoffs, whereas we looked like we were fighting for our lives and were a bit tight on the ball. I think we most probably did play the right game plan, but we just weren't as sprightly as we normally are, we just looked a little bit tight under the pressure."

For fans of the Pirates, this was a victory forged in heart and grit—a reminder that in rugby, it's not always about style, but about finding a way to win. Next week's showdown at Hartpury promises to be a fitting finale to a gripping regular season.
