Cornell lacrosse legend Rob Pannell is back in the spotlight, and he's not holding back. In an exclusive interview, the Maryland Whipsnakes attackman shared bold predictions for the 2026 PLL season, revealed his NCAA tournament favorites, and even opened up about the one college coaching job he'd seriously consider.
May is shaping up to be a massive month for lacrosse fans. The Premier Lacrosse League season kicks off on May 8 at Zions Bank Stadium in Salt Lake City, while the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Tournament starts May 6 and wraps up on May 25 in Charlottesville, Virginia. It's the perfect time to gear up and get ready for some high-stakes action.
Pannell, who is just 23 points away from breaking Paul Rabil's all-time PLL points record, knows a thing or two about milestones. He previously shattered the NCAA Division I all-time points record and the Cornell program assist record during his legendary Ivy League career. Now, he's setting his sights on the next big achievement.
When asked what would make the 2026 PLL season a success, Pannell didn't hesitate. "Sold-out stadiums, record-breaking viewership on ESPN, and a competitive environment," he said. He also highlighted the debut of the Women's Lacrosse League (WLL), which is playing its first games this year. "I think all those things are a focus."
As for the breakout player to watch, Pannell is putting his money on a teammate. "I'm going to go with someone on my team who had a great rookie year last year, but I think he has the potential to be the best player in the league," he said. "That's Aidan Carroll, who played at Georgetown. He can play attack or midfield, and he's one of the great young talents in our sport. I wouldn't be surprised if he's on the Olympic team in 2028. He could be the MVP of the league, if not this year, then in the years to come."
Pannell also took time to shine a light on CityLax, a non-profit organization that uses lacrosse to transform the lives of middle and high school students in New York City. The group's annual gala is set for May 6 at the New York Athletic Club, and Pannell is a vocal supporter of the cause.
With the season just days away, all eyes are on Pannell as he chases history. Whether you're rooting for the Whipsnakes or just love the game, this is a season you won't want to miss.
