Mumbai Indians' rollercoaster IPL campaign hit another bump as they crashed out of playoff contention following a heartbreaking two-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Sunday. The defeat marked the fourth time in six seasons—after 2021, 2022, and 2024—that the five-time champions failed to advance beyond the league stage, leaving fans and the franchise searching for answers.
Head coach Mahela Jayawardene didn't mince words after the match, acknowledging that his team simply wasn't good enough. "It's disappointing. We've had our opportunities. We were not consistent enough with the ball or the bat, and that showed in the margins," he said during the post-match press conference. "We were probably two or three wins away from being in the same group of contenders for that playoff spot."
With eight losses in 11 matches this season, questions naturally arose about the team's frequent lineup changes. But Jayawardene pushed back against that narrative, pointing instead to an injury crisis that forced the management's hand. "I don't think it was chopping and changing. We had a lot of injuries, a lot of niggles—guys getting injured, not available. Those were mostly forced changes," he explained.
When asked whether it made sense to keep backing underperforming senior players, the Sri Lankan legend stood firm. "They're also trying to do their best. The commitment and effort they're putting in is unbelievable. With Rohit (Sharma) getting injured and coming back to bat the way he did, it sums it up. The core group is quite valuable for us. You can't just keep changing. We went with the trust and confidence we have in them."
On the field, MI had RCB under pressure for long stretches after Tilak Varma (57 off 42) and Naman Dhir (47 off 32) lifted them to 166/7, despite Bhuvneshwar Kumar's impressive 4/23. But Krunal Pandya's masterful 73 off 46 balls kept RCB in the hunt and ultimately snatched victory from MI's grasp.
Reflecting on Krunal's match-winning knock, Jayawardene noted with a hint of nostalgia that the all-rounder "used to play similar roles for us while he was in MI," highlighting the invaluable experience Krunal brings to any IPL game. For Mumbai Indians, it's back to the drawing board as they look to rebuild and rediscover their championship-winning formula for next season.
