In a performance that will be remembered for seasons to come, Carthage pitcher Conrad Shahan delivered a masterful no-hitter on Saturday, leading the Bulldogs to a hard-fought 4-1 victory over Van in the decisive Game 3 of their 4A-D2 bi-district playoff series in Grand Saline, Texas.
The game didn't start ideally for Carthage, as Van managed to scratch across a run in the top of the first inning. But Shahan and the Bulldogs quickly found their rhythm, shutting down the Vandals' offense for the remainder of the contest. The real fireworks came in the bottom of the third, when Carthage erupted for four runs to seize control of the game.
The rally was sparked by clutch hitting from JoJo Mitchell, who laced a two-RBI double to bring home Cade Ross and Tate Pope, giving the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. Mitchell later crossed the plate on a Van error to extend the advantage to 4-1, which proved to be more than enough for Shahan, who kept the Vandals off the basepaths the rest of the way.
With the win, Carthage advances to the 4A-D2 area round, where they'll face Sunnyvale next week. For any aspiring pitcher or baseball fan, Shahan's no-hitter is a reminder that on the diamond, composure and precision can turn a tough start into a legendary finish.
