An NFL mock draft that is all about trades, the ones involving the Cleveland Browns are underwhelming

Mock draft season is in full swing, and the Cleveland Browns are a central figure in the trade speculation. While the creativity is appreciated, not every proposed deal passes the smell test for a team looking to build on a promising young core.

A recent ESPN mock draft by Bill Barnwell took a unique approach, constructing a trade for every single first-round pick. For the Browns, this meant a complex deal with the Dallas Cowboys. The proposal has Cleveland trading down from the coveted 6th overall pick to 12th, while also moving up from 24th to 20th and acquiring a 2027 second-round pick. In return, Dallas would get the premium 6th pick and send a 2027 fifth-rounder back.

On the surface, gaining an extra future asset is intriguing. However, for a team picking in the top ten, the value seems off. This year's draft class is widely seen as having a clear top tier of about six to eight "blue-chip" prospects. Moving out of that range for a modest jump later in the round and a future second-round pick likely doesn't move the needle for GM Andrew Berry. The opportunity to select a potential franchise cornerstone at a premium position is often worth more than a handful of later selections.

The mock draft also suggested the Browns could trade back from their other first-rounder, adding late-round capital. While Berry has shown a willingness to maneuver, the core of any deal must align with the team's competitive timeline. With a roster built to win now, surrendering a prime pick for future value that may not materialize until 2027 feels like a step back. For Browns fans dreaming of an immediate impact player to elevate the team's championship aspirations, this particular trade scenario, while interesting, ultimately falls short on delivering enough value to make it a reality.
