Antonio Williams is making all the right moves—and saying all the right things—as he kicks off his NFL journey with the Washington Commanders. After the first day of rookie minicamp on Friday, the former Clemson standout met with the media, and his message was clear: he's exactly where he wants to be.
Williams admitted he followed the draft closely and kept tabs on which receivers were selected before him. But instead of dwelling on that, he focused on the opportunity ahead. "I'm where I'm at, I am where I want to be now," Williams declared with confidence. "It all worked out perfectly. I'm happy I am here and I am happy to get to work."
The Commanders selected Williams at No. 71 overall, and his enthusiasm was palpable as he described his first practice in burgundy and gold. "It felt great, just like another dream come true stepping out on that field. I just love football and I love being out here competing with this team, these guys and getting to know everybody."
When a reporter asked what message he had for Commanders fans, Williams didn't hesitate. "When AP (Adam Peters, Commanders GM) drafted me, I have a responsibility to come and carry out the vision they had when they made that call to me. So, I am going to put my head down every day, put in all the work, and be the best version of myself. Hopefully, that is more than they expect from me."
Perhaps the most intriguing answer came when Williams was asked about his preferred position on the field—inside (slot) or outside receiver. His response? "I prefer everything. I feel like that's when I'm at my best. I feel like I am a versatile player. I can line up everywhere and run every route."
That kind of versatility is exactly what the Commanders need. In passing situations, having the ability to put your four best receivers on the field can be a game-changer. For now, Washington fans can take comfort in knowing their new rookie is not only talented but also grounded, focused, and genuinely excited to be part of the team.
