The Commanders are reportedly hoping to move back in next week's NFL draft.

With the 2026 NFL Draft just days away, the rumor mill is in overdrive, and the Washington Commanders find themselves at the center of a strategic pivot. According to reports, General Manager Adam Peters is actively exploring options to trade down from their current spot at No. 7 overall.

The motivation is clear: capital. The Commanders enter the draft with only six selections, having forfeited their second and fourth-round picks in last year's successful trade for star left tackle Laremy Tunsil. While that deal was a win—Tunsil was phenomenal and earned a massive extension—Peters is now looking to replenish the war chest.

They are not alone in this desire. Analyst Albert Breer identifies Washington as one of five teams in the top 10, including the Cardinals, Titans, Giants, and Browns, who are looking to slide back in the order. The challenge, however, is finding a trade partner willing to move up.

This year's draft class complicates the calculus. With a perceived lack of depth at the premium quarterback position and many of the top talents—like running back Jeremiyah Love and safety Caleb Downs—playing non-premium roles, the market for top-10 picks is cooler than usual. A team like the Dallas Cowboys, often mentioned as a candidate to move up, would be highly unlikely to strike a deal with division rivals like the Giants or Commanders.

So, what's the play? The Commanders face a classic draft dilemma. Do they stay put at No. 7 and select a potential blue-chip player, or do they move back to acquire more assets? In a recent mock draft, analyst Daniel Jeremiah projected a scenario where Washington trades down to No. 16 with the New York Jets, picking up an additional second and fourth-round pick in the process.

For a franchise building for the future, the allure of adding multiple impact players could outweigh selecting a single star. As draft night approaches, all eyes will be on the Commanders' war room to see which path they choose to build their roster.
