A great first impression for Sonny Styles.

When a rookie makes waves during his first NFL practice, you take notice. And for Washington Commanders linebacker Sonny Styles, that first impression was nothing short of spectacular.

Friday was a big day for Styles. He signed his rookie contract in the morning, met with the media, and then took the field for the first time in burgundy and gold. At 6-foot-5 and 244 pounds, he cuts an imposing figure—especially when you factor in his defensive back-like speed. It's a combination that had everyone watching closely.

Zach Selby of commanders.com was among the first to offer a glowing review. "Styles stood out among Washington's defensive players, both physically and from a performance standpoint," Selby wrote. "He was easy to spot with his 6-foot-5, 244-pound frame, and he was around the ball on almost every play. He's already showing his ability to quickly identify and pursue ball carriers, and he was often the first to make a play."

Selby highlighted a key moment from the first 11-on-11 session: On just the third play, Styles cut under a block and got to running back Kaytron Allen for what would have been a tackle for a minimal gain. That kind of instinct and quickness is exactly what coaches love to see.

And Selby wasn't alone in his praise. One league representative at the rookie minicamp described Styles as someone who "moves different" up close and personal. "Loved his tape, but seeing 245 move like that up close—special," the rep said. "He could even be a special TE in this league if he wanted to… different type of guy."

Even a former NFL star wide receiver caught a glimpse of Styles in practice and was visibly impressed. It's early, and rookie minicamp is just the first step—there are no veterans on the field and no contact allowed. But for a player like Styles, this was a chance to set the tone.

Head coach Dan Quinn has already said there's "no limit" to what Styles can do. That kind of confidence from a coach speaks volumes. With OTAs on the horizon later this month, fans will get a better look at how this rookie fits into Washington's defensive scheme. For now, though, the early returns are more than promising—they're electric.
