The Washington Commanders are adding a familiar face and a wealth of experience to their coaching staff. The team announced the hiring of John Glenn as the new assistant special teams coach, a move that brings a seasoned NFL veteran back into the fold.

This marks a return to Washington for Glenn, who served as a special teams assistant under coordinator Larry Izzo during the 2024 season. That year, Izzo's units were a major strength, ranking an impressive 3rd in punt return yardage allowed and 2nd in kickoff return yardage allowed. Glenn departed after that campaign to become the linebackers coach for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025.

His return is timely, as he will help support Izzo and the special teams group. He effectively replaces Brian Schneider, who remains on staff but is currently undergoing cancer treatments, as head coach Dan Quinn noted in January.

Glenn's NFL pedigree is deeply tied to the Seattle Seahawks, where he built his professional coaching resume over a remarkable 12-year stretch from 2012 through 2023. Starting as a coaching and special teams assistant, he climbed the ranks to become the assistant linebackers coach in 2017 and eventually the linebackers coach. In that role, he had the privilege of coaching future Hall of Famer Bobby Wagner for several seasons—a connection of note, as Wagner, a recent Commander, is currently a free agent.

This hire signals the Commanders' commitment to building a strong, experienced staff as they look to solidify all phases of their game in the upcoming season.
