The Washington Commanders have signed themselves an additional kicker.

Some (like me) thought the Commanders might use their round-seven choice on a kicker, but that selection went to Rutgers QB Athan Kaliakmanis, in hopes of improving their third-quarterback situation, and that is understandable.

Two days after the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft, the Commanders signed undrafted Iowa kicker Drew Stevens. Stevens was a four-time All-Big Ten Kicker with the Hawkeyes.

Stevens kicked with the Hawkeyes all four seasons (2022-25). In his four seasons he connected on all but two of his extra point attempts (124-126). Regarding field goals, Stevens enjoyed two seasons of accuracy, successfully connecting on 88.9 and 87.0 percent of his field goal attempts. But honestly, his other two seasons saw drop offs in percentage, connecting on 69.2 and 78.6 percent.

In his senior season, Stevens was 41-42 in extra points, while connecting on 22-28 field goal attempts, scoring his college career high of 107 points, including a 58-yard field goal vs Oregon. Stevens scoring 352 points is 18th all-time in the Big Ten. His 22 field goals made in 2025 was tops in the Big Ten and his 76 career field goals is second in the Big Ten.

Signing Stevens means the Commanders will have two kickers in training camp competing for the job. Jake Moody will be the returning kicker for Washington. In 2025, Moody was signed during the season and played the last six games for Washington. Moody was 10-11 on his field goal attempts, including 2-2 at or beyond 50 yards.

Incidentally, Moody was also a Big Ten kicker, handling all kicking duties for the Michigan Wolverines (2018-2022).
