It was supposed to be a chance to bounce back. After a painful 3-2 loss to Minnesota United—a match they felt they should have won—the Columbus Crew spent a full week regrouping. But when they stepped onto the field at Yankee Stadium on May 10, all that preparation evaporated in a brutal 3-0 defeat that left the team searching for answers.

The tone was set early. NYCFC's Hannes Wolf delivered a hat trick, scoring the first two goals within the first 15 minutes on devastating counterattacks. Unlike the Minnesota match, where the Crew started strong before collapsing, this time they were overwhelmed from the opening whistle. Coach Henrik Rydstrom didn't mince words when asked what went wrong: "It's lack of intensity. We don't compete from the beginning. I can stop there."

But he didn't stop there. Rydstrom pointed to a troubling return of early-season defensive issues—particularly defending counterattacks. "For me it looked a little bit like the beginning of the season," he said. "The last six games, we have been good erasing those kinds of behaviors. The behaviors from the first part of the season repeated this game."

Not everyone agreed with the coach's assessment. Defender Sean Zawadzki argued that tough losses like this are just part of the game, emphasizing that the key is how the team responds. Midfielder Dylan Chambost offered another perspective, noting that the Crew seemed to lose confidence after Wolf's first goal in the 12th minute—a familiar pattern that has plagued them in past matches.

Now the real challenge begins. Unlike last week, there's no time to wallow. The Crew head back to Columbus for a quick turnaround before facing Red Bull New York on May 13 in Harrison, New Jersey, followed by a trip to Philadelphia on May 16. It's a brutal stretch that will test their mental toughness as much as their tactical discipline.

You can bet that defending counterattacks, protecting leads, and staying mentally sharp after conceding goals will be at the top of the whiteboard in training. For the Crew, the next few days aren't just about fixing mistakes—they're about rediscovering the fight that carried them through their recent strong run. The answers won't come easy, but they need to come fast.
