In a move that signals the end of an era for the Indianapolis Colts secondary, veteran cornerback Kenny Moore II has officially been released at his own request. The nine-year NFL veteran, who turns 31 this August, sought a trade back in April, but when no deal materialized through the 2025 NFL Draft, both sides agreed to part ways via release instead.

Moore's departure clears significant cap space for Indianapolis. He was set to count $13.1 million against the cap in the final year of his three-year, $30 million contract. By moving on now, the Colts save over $7 million—a financial win for a team that has been aggressive in reshaping its defense.

Moore's journey to the NFL is the stuff of underdog dreams. An undrafted free agent out of Valdosta State in 2017, he worked his way into the Colts' lineup and quickly became one of the league's most reliable nickel cornerbacks. His breakout came in 2021, when he earned a Pro Bowl nod, cementing his reputation as a savvy, instinctive defender who could hold his own against the league's best slot receivers.

But the Colts' defense has undergone a major transformation. Last season, Indianapolis invested heavily at cornerback, signing Charvarius Ward and trading for Sauce Gardner to anchor coordinator Lou Anarumo's scheme. Moore also battled through an Achilles injury that sidelined him for three games, making his role less certain in a crowded secondary.

With Moore gone, the Colts appear ready to turn the page. Third-round draft pick Justin Walley—who missed his entire rookie season in 2024 due to a torn ACL suffered last August—is expected to compete for the nickel role, giving Indianapolis a young, cost-controlled option moving forward.

For Moore, this release opens the door to a fresh start. At 31 and with a proven track record as a slot specialist, he should draw interest from teams looking to add veteran savvy to their secondary. Whether he lands with a contender or finds a new home as a mentor in a young defensive backfield, his next chapter is sure to be closely watched.
