The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for what might be the most intense position battle of training camp—and it's not at a spot vacated by a long-term starter. Instead, it's a showdown between two familiar faces: Blake Grupe and Spencer Shrader, both of whom started for the Colts last season.
After bringing Grupe back in free agency, the stage is set for a winner-take-all competition at kicker, a position that's been in flux since the legendary Adam Vinatieri finally hung up his cleats. The Colts have seen their share of kicking battles since then, but this one feels different. For the first time in a while, Indianapolis believes it has two of the top 32 kickers in the NFL on its roster.
"It's going to be exciting to see how those two guys compete," said special teams coordinator Brian Mason. "I think it'll bring the best out of both of them. One of them will certainly win the competition and be starting for the Colts, and one of them will be fortunate enough to start for somebody else. But I think they're both going to be starting kickers this year in the NFL."
Mason knows both players well, having worked closely with them during their time in Indianapolis. Grupe returns as a reliable option, while Shrader is recovering and looking to reclaim his spot. The battle promises to be intense, with every practice kick and preseason attempt carrying extra weight.
For the Colts, this competition isn't just about finding a starter—it's about solidifying a position that's been a question mark for years. With two talented kickers pushing each other, Indianapolis might finally have the stability it's been searching for. As Mason put it, "It's going to be a difficult one," but that's exactly the kind of problem every team wants to have.
