The Indianapolis Colts' quarterback room just got a lot more interesting. Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter is keeping his cards close to the vest, refusing to name a definitive backup QB as the team moves into Phase Two of its voluntary offseason program.

"It's too soon," Cooter told reporters Wednesday when asked whether Anthony Richardson or Riley Leonard holds the edge for the No. 2 spot. "We're going about our business the way that we do, going through drills and routes on air, working through some walkthrough tempo things."

The drama began when Richardson—the former fourth-overall pick—requested a trade back in February at the NFL Combine. The Colts were open to the idea but couldn't find a willing partner. After spending the first two weeks of the offseason program training on his own in Jacksonville, the 23-year-old returned to the team facility on Monday, instantly reigniting a battle many thought was already settled.

Enter Riley Leonard, the 2025 sixth-round rookie who made his first career start in the season finale against Houston. Leonard came into this offseason expecting to handle an increased workload while starter (and rehabbing star) continues recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. With Richardson still dealing with vision restrictions from a fractured orbital bone suffered in a freak pregame accident last October—and his trade request hanging in the air—Leonard seemed like the clear temporary heir apparent.

But Richardson's return has thrown the depth chart into question. "May the best man win," Cooter said, echoing the competitive spirit that defines training camp battles. For now, both quarterbacks will compete for snaps behind center, with the Colts' offense watching closely to see who rises to the occasion.
