The Colorado Rockies are looking to bounce back tonight after a tough loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where rookie phenom Paul Skenes did what he does best—dominate. The Rockies were held hitless until the seventh inning, when Mickey Moniak finally broke through with a single. But with Skenes now out of the way for the series, the Rockies have a real chance to steal a win or two in the Steel City.
Taking the mound for the Rockies is veteran left-hander José Quintana. After a rocky start to the season, Quintana has quietly found his groove over the past month. In his last three outings, he's gone at least five innings and allowed two or fewer earned runs each time. While he's not a strikeout machine, he's cut down on walks and kept opposing batters from scoring, even when they reach base. His most recent start came against the New York Mets, where he surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings.
On the other side, the Pirates will send right-hander Mitch Keller to the hill. Keller has been outstanding this season, posting a 2.87 ERA with 35 strikeouts over 41 innings. He's made eight starts and logged six Quality Starts, failing to pitch into the sixth inning only twice. He's also been tough on the Rockies throughout his career, holding a 1.91 ERA in five appearances (four starts) with 26 strikeouts in 28.1 innings. Keller relies on a low-to-mid 90s four-seam fastball, but his real weapons are his breaking pitches—a sweeper, sinker, slider, curveball, changeup, and cutter. His curveball is especially nasty, with a 44.4% whiff rate and a 30.8% put-away rate.
Can the Rockies' bats wake up against Keller and snap their three-game skid? It's all set for an exciting Game 2 in Pittsburgh.
