College teammates turned PGA Tour rivals—that's the story unfolding at the Truist Championship this weekend.

Wake Forest alums Cameron Young and Alex Fitzpatrick are battling it out atop the leaderboard at Quail Hollow, bringing a unique twist to an already exciting tournament. While the names Young and Fitzpatrick have become synonymous with success this season—combining for five tour wins—it's the brother of a familiar face making headlines this time.

Alex Fitzpatrick, younger brother of PGA star Matt Fitzpatrick, leads the Truist Championship by one shot over Kristoffer Reitan and two shots over Young. For fans of college golf, this matchup is pure nostalgia: Young and Fitzpatrick were teammates at Wake Forest, where Young was a senior when Fitzpatrick arrived as a freshman in 2018-19.

"I have nothing but good things to say about Cam," said the 27-year-old Fitzpatrick. "He kind of really looked after me." Young, now ranked No. 3 in the world, returned the sentiment, noting that Fitzpatrick was too talented for the usual freshman hazing. The two quickly became starting lineup fixtures for the Demon Deacons.

Their bond extends beyond the course. After Fitzpatrick and his brother Matt won the Zurich Classic—a team event that earned Alex his PGA Tour card—Young sent a congratulatory text. "I didn't think he would be thinking he would see me in the next two weeks," Fitzpatrick joked.

Young enters the final round with momentum, having shot a 63 on Saturday. The 29-year-old won the Cadillac Championship by six shots just last week for his third career PGA win, adding to his earlier victory at The Players Championship. He also tied for third at the Masters, just two shots behind champion Rory McIlroy.

For Fitzpatrick, this is a breakout moment. He claimed his first career win on the DP World Tour in March at the Indian Hero Open, and now he's proving he belongs on the biggest stage.

As for Matt Fitzpatrick? He's tied for 51st at even par through 16 holes of the final round—leaving the family spotlight firmly on his younger brother.

The final round of the Truist Championship airs on CBS and ESPN+ starting at 3 p.m. ET Sunday. Whether you're rooting for the underdog or the world No. 3, this college reunion is must-watch golf.
