In a move that adds a fascinating chapter to Big Ten football family history, RJ Day—the son of Ohio State head coach Ryan Day—has officially committed to Northwestern University. The class of 2027 quarterback announced his decision via Instagram on Sunday, choosing the Wildcats over 12 other offers, including Boston College and Cincinnati.
"Excited for the next step and ready to get to work," Day posted, thanking his coaches and family for their support.
Rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports, Day brings impressive credentials to Evanston. During his three-year starting tenure at St. Francis DeSales High School in Columbus, Ohio, he shattered multiple school passing records: career passing yards (5,714), touchdown passes (54), single-season passing yards (2,710), and single-season TD passes (25).
Day becomes the third quarterback to commit to Northwestern this offseason, joining Michigan State transfer Aidan Chiles and class of 2026 three-star Johnny O'Brien from Palatine's William Fremd High School. But what makes this commitment particularly intriguing is the connection to the Wildcats' new offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly.
Kelly and Ryan Day share a deep history. Kelly served as Day's offensive coordinator when the younger Day played quarterback at New Hampshire from 1998 to 2001. Fast forward 23 years, and Ryan Day brought Kelly to Ohio State as offensive coordinator—the same season the Buckeyes captured their most recent national championship. Now, RJ Day will have the opportunity to learn under Kelly's system at Northwestern.
For a program looking to build momentum under head coach David Braun, landing a quarterback with this kind of pedigree and family football lineage is a significant statement. The Wildcats are clearly assembling depth and talent at the position, and Day's commitment adds a compelling storyline to watch in the coming years.
