CJ Abrams is officially on fire. The Washington Nationals shortstop delivered another electric performance Tuesday night, powering his team to a tight 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates with a three-hit showcase that included a home run and a double.
Abrams set the tone early, driving in a run with a first-inning single as part of a three-run outburst. He then provided a crucial insurance run in the fourth, launching a solo shot down the left-field line to extend the lead to 4-1. Over his last five games, Abrams is a scorching 9-for-17 with three homers and seven RBIs, establishing himself as a central figure in the Nationals' recent surge.
While Abrams led the charge, the Nationals' bullpen sealed the deal. Left-hander Mitchell Parker, freshly recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, was brilliant in relief, striking out five over two scoreless innings to earn his first win. Gus Varland then navigated a tense ninth, stranding the tying run to collect his second save and secure Washington's fourth win in five games.
The Pirates mounted a challenge behind the power of Brandon Lowe and Joey Bart, who each slugged solo homers. Lowe's blast was his seventh of the year, continuing a torrid stretch that has placed him among some elite company in Pirates history. Despite the loss and the end of Oneil Cruz's 12-game hitting streak, Pittsburgh saw a positive sign as Marcell Ozuna broke out with two hits and his first RBI of the season.
After a rain-delayed start, the Nationals' offense and bullpen proved too much. With momentum on their side, they'll look to take the series Wednesday night.
