This weekend, the Premier League is sending a powerful message: it's okay to talk. All matches from 9–11 May, including Manchester City's Saturday showdown against Brentford at the Etihad Stadium, will be dedicated to the League's Inside Matters mental health awareness campaign. The initiative kicks off just ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week (11–17 May), encouraging fans to check in with friends, family, and loved ones—sparking conversations that can make a real difference to mental wellbeing.
But the support doesn't stop at kickoff. Saturday's match also marks City in the Community's (CITC) annual Community Matchday, bringing together players, fans, staff, and partners to empower healthier lives across Greater Manchester through football. It's a reminder that the beautiful game can be a force for good both on and off the pitch.
Young people are stepping up too. As part of the Premier League Inspires Challenge, participants from the City Inspires Oasis Oldham team developed an innovative support hub app. After identifying key challenges facing their peers, they created a platform that brings together trusted resources, guidance, and school support services in one place—showcasing creativity, teamwork, and a shared commitment to community care.
This work is part of the wider City Thrive programme, launched in 2020 in partnership with the NHS, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital CAMHS, and Primary Care Networks across Greater Manchester. Using the power of football, City Thrive helps normalize conversations around mental health, offering dedicated sessions that support young people when they need it most.
May also marks the two-year anniversary of Andy's Man Club at the Etihad Stadium. Over the past 24 months, Manchester City and the Halifax-based suicide prevention charity have delivered more than 370 free, weekly peer-to-peer support sessions for men in the local community. It's a testament to how clubs can create safe spaces that go far beyond matchday—proving that the strongest teams are built on connection, compassion, and the courage to talk.
