Patrick Mahomes is making his way back from injury, and the NFL is already betting big on his return. The league has officially scheduled the Kansas City Chiefs to host the Denver Broncos in Week 1 on Monday Night Football, a primetime slot that signals serious confidence in the superstar quarterback's availability.
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, that schedule placement didn't happen by chance. Speaking on ESPN's 'Get Up,' Schefter revealed that the Chiefs have been optimistic about Mahomes' recovery, saying he's "way ahead of schedule." The league wouldn't risk putting Kansas City in the spotlight without a strong belief that Mahomes will be under center. "You would never bet against Patrick Mahomes, and the NFL certainly hasn't," Schefter noted.
Of course, the summer will tell the real story. Mahomes' knee rehab remains the focus, and the team is tracking him toward that Week 1 showdown against Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix, who is also recovering from ankle surgery. To add a layer of security, the Chiefs traded for veteran Justin Fields earlier this offseason. Fields provides a capable backup option, but all signs point to Mahomes leading the charge when the lights are brightest.
In other Chiefs news, the team's offseason roster moves are drawing attention, especially at wide receiver. With Rashee Rice entering the final year of his rookie contract and the depth chart behind Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton looking thin, many expected Kansas City to target a wideout early in the NFL Draft. General manager Brett Veach had three Day 2 picks at his disposal, but the draft board didn't cooperate. Instead of reaching for a receiver, Veach opted to stick with the current core, signaling a vote of confidence in the group's potential. Whether that gamble pays off remains to be seen, but the Chiefs are clearly betting on their existing talent to step up.
