Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane didn't hold back in his praise for Levi Colwill, calling the young defender a true "leader" after the Blues battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday. It was a statement performance that showed the squad's resilience, and Colwill was at the heart of it.
Making his first start of the season after recovering from a serious knee ligament injury sustained in pre-season, Colwill slotted seamlessly into a back three alongside Wesley Fofana and Jorrel Hato. After a shaky start where Liverpool dominated early, the trio tightened up brilliantly, limiting the hosts' attacking threats and helping Chelsea bounce back from a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest just days earlier.
"Levi was the best player on the pitch," McFarlane told BBC's Match of the Day after the final whistle. "He was a leader. It was his first 90 minutes for a long time." High praise indeed for a player who has quickly become a fan favorite at Stamford Bridge.
The match itself was a rollercoaster. Liverpool's Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring after just five minutes, putting Chelsea on the back foot early. But the Blues showed real character, with Enzo Fernandez leveling the score just before halftime. In the second half, both Curtis Jones and Cole Palmer had goals disallowed, but Chelsea held firm to end a six-game losing streak in the Premier League.
"It's a good point, a good performance in a game that could have gone either way," McFarlane added. "It was disappointing to concede so early, and it's something we'll have a look at. But I was pleased with the response. I thought the reaction was brilliant."
The interim boss also emphasized the team's growing identity: "I thought we played some really nice stuff, we finished the half really well. As a whole the effort, commitment, work rate and desire was good. Last Monday was disappointing. We reviewed it and spoke about the reaction we wanted. I felt we got that and it's something we can build on."
For Chelsea fans, this draw feels like more than just a point. It's a sign that the squad is finding its feet, and with leaders like Colwill stepping up, the future is looking brighter. Whether you're gearing up for matchday or just celebrating a gritty performance, this is the kind of spirit that defines a team on the rise.
